Pauldron (Shield-Side) WIP by Alphared137
Pauldron (Shield-Side) WIP
Quick view of the test fit on the opposite shoulder. This one will also receive some sculptural details in the form of a relief sculpture. I may attempt to use some kind of clay to add the details but I need to test how well the adhere to the material. If this fails, I will do the sculptural embellishments in craft foam, since I know the styrene-foam hotglue bond is very strong... stronger than the foam in fact!

Pauldron (Sculptural) WIP by Alphared137
Pauldron (Sculptural) WIP
Been awhile since the last update, but I was trying a variety of reinforcing techniques to try and make this pauldron more durable, with limited results. I have completed cutting all parts of this pauldron out of 0.02" white styrene and hotglued everything together, reinforcing with a hotglued second layer of stryene at certain points. This styrene-hotglue-styrene sandwich is surprisingly strong, however, everything is exceptionally sensitive to heat damage. Too long in a hot car and it will definitely explode apart or melt at the joints.

I then test fit the pauldron on the chestplate for size and proportion. I am fairly satisfied with how it stands now (definitely going to do a version 2.0 of this once my skill level goes up), so the next step is engineering attachment points at the neck for the pauldrons. I'd like to be able to detach the pauldrons for easier transport.

Pauldron Sculptural Detail WIP by Alphared137
Pauldron Sculptural Detail WIP
Here I've got the reference images, construction paper pattern and styrene pattern side by side. I'll be cutting the dome pauldron out of 0.02" styrene next and then attaching the sculptural detail to the armor plate (I'll also be reinforcing everything with a backing of styrene hot glued to the inside, as well as adding paper fasteners to serve as physical rivets for additional joining security. The hotglue will suffer under direct sun and is likely to give way if stored in a hot car for too long... a physical rivet should help prevent certain areas from exploding or giving way.

Pauldron Iterations Collage Jun 2014 by Alphared137
Pauldron Iterations Collage Jun 2014
Here I have a series of prototypes that I quickly put together using basic shapes and different shoulder plate style combinations. I rapidly iterated of the course of an hour to generate a variety of looks to later look over and digest. I've settled on a dome pauldron for the weapon arm, but am still thinking about the shield arm. All patterns done with heavy 18" x 18" construction paper. Final patterns will be done in 0.02" styrene and reinforced.

No problem!  You're work is fantastic so I'm more than happy to follow it on FB and DA, even if your progress is slow.  My course load is also pretty crazy this semester so I can definitely relate.
